Abstract: In this work an experiment for the investigation of surfaces with the methods of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray phototelectron diffraction (XPD) is presented. A spectrometer with a multi-channel detection system allows to record photoelectron-spectra und photoelectron-diffraction-patterns in reasonable times. Because of the dominant forward scattering the intensity maxima in these diffraction-patterns correlates with interatomic axes. This allows the determination of the structure of the adsorbed molecules in a straightforward manner. Adsorbed layers of methoxy/Ni(110), formate/Ni(110), formate/Cu(110) and acetate/Cu(110) were investigated. The formate- and acetate-molecules are bonded through their oxygen-atoms in a so-called bidentate-structure along the closed-packed rows of the (110)-surfaces. The O-C-O bonding-angle is determined as 122° ± 2°. Hints for an incorporation of atomic oxygen an substitution-places of the substrate lattice are discussed.
